附:Abstract of the Lecture
Since the discovery of carbon nanotubes, extensive investigations have been carried out on both single/multi-walled carbon nanotubes and their composites. A major research focus in the field has been to characterize precisely the mechanical properties of nanotubes using various methods including continuum mechanics and molecular dynamics modelling, and chemical reactivity of nanotubes with a class of matrix materials to form nanocomposites with strong interface stress transfer capability. Developing efficient techniques for fabricating nanocomposites with tailored microstructures has also been emphasized recently.
This lecture will briefly discuss some of such ‘fashionable’ research issues. The aspects to address will include the dilemma about the wall thickness and Young’s modulus of single-walled carbon nanotubes, critical issues in molecular dynamics analysis, stress transfer and dispersion and alignment of nanotubes in composites, tribological performance of carbon nanotubes, and some open problems to resolve.
